Bill of rights and the later amendments
Although many people do not like the government or the laws in America, it is very effective because the Bill of Rights limits the powerful government, protects citizen’s individual rights, guarantees their freedoms, and ensures that the power lies within the people. Many people have stated various dislikes about America, but why? America is such a great country to live in. The fact that it’s stayed progressive for so long makes it even better. What is it like in your country? Do you have the rights that Americans have?
In the summer of 1787, the colonists made their first attempt to a new Constitution. This constitution set up a weaker central government because the American people were all scared of Britain’s strong government that they had just broken away from. A Bill of Rights was not included in that first draft. Without it, some people would not agree to ratify the Constitution because it only told what the government could do, not giving many restrictions or limits. After debating, they decided adding a Bill or Rights would be a good idea because they wanted to protect their newly won freedoms from a strong national government. According to Thomas Jefferson a“bill of rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth… and what no government should refuse (Bill of Rights Institution). The Bill of Rights was then established by James Madison, and added to the Constitution.
The Bill of Rights is an extremely important document that states what the government can and cannot do. It protects all the citizens’ individual rights and limits their government tremendously. These rights apply to everyone, not just a certain group of people because in America they believe everyone is created and treated equally which is just another good thing about the country. The Bill of Rights gives the people the power and establishes the idea of due process. Mainly, it protects the rights and freedoms of all Americans.
The Bill of Rights is very important to all Americans. One of the governments many purposes are to protect and guarantee everyone’s rights, not to tell them or anyone else how to live their lives. The amendments give people the freedom of religion, speech, press, bearing arms, and many more. As an American, they can believe in any religion they want to and worship however and whenever they want to. The people also have the freedom of speech. It lets one express their thoughts or even speak out against the government without penalties. The conceal and carry amendment allows an individual to protect themselves and be able to hunt for food. The right to a fair trial ensures that everyone is treated fairly, which is very important in a properly working society. Americans believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a trial. The Bill of Rights most importantly limits the government and gives the people more power (Dinan,
John). That results in a more fair society in which works better and keeps order and happiness among the people.
Not only does the Bill or Rights give Americans more freedom, but the later amendments also do. The slavery laws are very important. Outlawing slavery was a huge move, but now those amendments basically just make sure that everyone’s treated equally and “prohibits a state from depriving any person of
life, liberty, or property without “due process of law””(Remy, 89). It also ensures that all citizens “have the right to equal protection of the law in the states” and “prohibits the government from denying a person’s right to vote on the basis of race’ (Remy, 89). Women’s gaining the right to vote was, again, also a big deal. For a woman, the nineteenth amendment is very extremely important when they reach the legal age of 18. Men and women are now considered equal in America which is just another thing that makes America great. Later amendments make sure taxation does not get ridiculous and ensures the people do not get their money taken for no reason. America is great because they actually try to ensure that everyone is equal which doesn’t happen in many other countries.
Many years ago before all these rights were given to Americans, people had almost no freedom. For example, people were forced to practice certain religions. In some countries, it is still like that! Many countries do not have a whole lot of freedom or rights still today! That is why America is so great! The people have a lot more freedom than in other countries. Some people do not like America, but the question is, why? If so many people do not like America, why do so many people continue to go there for better job opportunities and for more individual rights and freedoms? What is actually so bad about America? Every country obviously has its faults, but if America is given a chance, you will see how great it actually is! A lot of people love the country, and you should too.
Even though the amendments were written over 200 years ago, they are still very effective and apply to the citizens today as much as they did when they were first amended. That is just another example of how great their government is! America is a great place to be. The Bill of Rights is one of the many examples that prove its greatness. It defends American’s rights to live a free life. To sum it all up, if you did not like America before, hopefully you have been given a different insight on the country. It is a great country, and
everyone should get a chance to know about it. Many people really enjoy living in America and having all the luxuries they do. Being able to worship is a huge part of some people’s lives, and in America, they can do that freely. Most citizens are extremely happy knowing that they can be educated in a very great environment, to one day grow up and get a wonderful job in the land of opportunity and live their American Dream to its fullest. All this Americans know, the Bill of Rights is just their written guarantee. Does your country have
that much freedom?
